Hello everyone! I'm here today to talk about why it is so important for you to have good pictures and diagrams in your rulebooks. We're going to look at some interesting science behind this
You may have heard of studies that talk about how people learn better in different ways the majority of which are visual, auditory, or kinesthetic. Many of these studies have been proven false by scientists today. In fact scientists have proven at about 75% of all learning is done visually. That saying "a picture is worth a thousand words" has serious truth in it. When it comes to learning and remember your vision trumps everything in terms of effectiveness due to what scientists call Picture Superiority Effect.
This is the reason why Capps is always giving praise to rulebooks that have good graphics with examples of play. Your brain literally remembers and learns from pictures better then just text alone. If you want to know how large a margin this is, if I were to tell you a factoid right now there is a 10% chance you will remember it. If I added pictures to it your recall for the memory will increase 65%.

That is a HUGE difference! Every wondered why Capps usually has a few pictures in each of his reviews? So you'll be more likely to remember them, him, and maybe even me in all my rulebook reviewing glory!
Now if pictures are better then words should we only use pictures to explain things? No. The interesting thing with how the mind interpenetrates words is that every word you read right now is being interpreted by your brain as little pictures. So these pictures CAN be helpful especially when broken up with useful pictures.
How can you make the best of these little pictures of words? Tomorrow I'm going to sit down and explain the difference between concrete and abstract text and what it means to your rulebooks.
