Ever been excited to get a kickstarter game only to have it come with bad rules that leave you disappointed? Well here at Rulebook Review we plan to help that not happen any longer!
Today Rulebook Review is taking a look at Flick Wars. Flick Wars is a dexterity game that at the time of writing is currently on kickstarter. In Flick Wars you control a faction of high tech units battling over the most valuable resource in the universe: Flick. If you want to learn more about the game, check it out on BGG. The kickstarter ends in 22 days at the time of writing so if you'd like to help fund the game, check out their kickstarter page.
As this is a Kickstarter game when reviewing the rulebook we understand that games may not have the entirety of their final art assets complete yet so we give lenience to the graphics sections. However we still expect the rulebook to be properly organized, clear, cover everything, and be written well. If you'd like to see the rulebook in PDF form to follow along check it out here. Let's get started!
Organization and Layout: The rulebook seems to be organized well. If you plan to play with more then 2 players it tells you to go towards the end of the rulebook and for the advanced version of the game they place it near the end as well. It works well as it lets you play the most basic version of the game first and build up as you wish, a good idea. You can read the rulebook from start to finish to learn how to play as well, something we always like to see.
Clarity: None of the rules were particularly complex, the way the rules are written everything is put forward in an almost conversational tone however which may not always be perfect for explanations but it keeps to the theme of the rules well and doesn't make the rules difficult to learn. You can definitely sit down and learn the rules easily.
Graphics: All of the graphics are not yet complete, but the few graphics the rulebook already has are clear and work. Hopefully the rest of the graphics will be the same!
Depth: The rulebook covers edge cases quite well. It looks to be that the rulebook isn't missing anything needed to play the game and will always be able to explain something you need.
Writing: The writing feels... choppy at times. Sometime it draws you out of the rulebook a bit as it just doesn't have the professional feel you expect from a rulebook or is just bland and feels like it makes you start and stop a lot. There is a good bit of fluff in the rulebook unfortunately and the occasional grammar mistake as well. At least I didn't spot any typos!
Having no fingers, Susan is not often seen flicking. However he is most certainly a rulebook expert! On the Susan Rating Scale, this rulebook gets:
Susan's Explanation: Most of the rulebook has some great elements to it however the small flaws really do add up. The writing itself really was a hard thing for me to get over as well, it needs some serious work to bring it up a notch. For a kickstarter project this rulebook just doesn't have the kind of polish it needs.
Now as this kickstarter is still going at the time of writing we are not against giving the makers of the game another chance! If they would like to get a professional edit from us or just revise their rulebook we will happily look at it again and revise our review.
