Today our kick on Kickstarters continue with a rulebook review of Eggs and Empires! Eggs and Empires is a simultanious bidding game in which players attempt to collect various kinds of eggs to score the most victory points. You can learn more about the game by watching the video above or clicking the picture on the side. If you want to get a look at the rulebook so you can follow along you can see a PDF version of the rules here. Let's get started! | |
Organization and Layout: The rulebook allows easy reading as nothing is out of place. You can easily start from the beginning and read through it to play your first turns and learn the game. The layout is simple and straightforward which fits the game nicely.
Clarity: Almost everything in the rules were quite clear. The only oddity I noticed was "The last player to get eaten by a Dragon is given the Tie Breaker Marker." I have a feeling this is supposed to be a funny way to choose but since the game was about dragons I scoured the rulebook looking about some sort of rule within the game of being eaten by a dragon while collecting eggs. I was unsure whether to put this in the writing section or not, but since it made the rules confusing for a moment I put the complaint here.
Graphics: There aren't really any picture examples but the game has good explanation so it is not horrible necessary. The one bit of graphics really there is the components list and they look good.
Depth: With a nice section on the end thoroughly explaining Empire Card Abilities as well as good written examples about the gameplay in the rulebook I was not left wanting when it comes to understanding edge cases and interesting scenarios the game can have.
Writing: I want to point out this rulebook as a great example of using capitalization, bold and italics right, it really does add to the writing here. I didn't find fluff in the rulebook either and didn't find a single typo. All in all a very professional written presentation you expect from a good rulebook.
Having slayed many a dragon and read many a rulebook however, Susan is the mustache to see in this situation! On the Susan Rating Scale this game gets:
Susan's Explanation: Other then the one tiny bit about being eaten by dragons this really is a solid rulebook. It will be easy for players new to games and gaming veterans alike to sit down and learn to play do to how well the rules are written. Overall a seriously good rulebook!
