Today we're going to take a look at the rules for the kickstarter game Black Market Warehouse! You can learn more about the game by watching the video above or clicking the picture to the side. One of the reasons I was so excited to give this rulebook a look was it was featured so prominently on their kickstarter page. The second was their guarantee of "Fire Tested" games. "Each game has gone through hours of play testing to ensure that rules make sense, are cohesive, and is an enjoyable gaming experience." While fire is good and all, nothing can show the true greatness of a rulebook more then a mustache! I now leave this review in Susan's capable hands... er... curls. | |
Thanks Capps! Of course as usual we will be grading the rulebook on its organization and layout, clarity, graphics, depth, and writing. It is a kickstarter game however and since some of the game or art assets may not be complete I'll be lenient if necessary. You can see the rulebook by going to the kickstarter page. So head on over if you want to follow along. Let's get this Mustache Test started!
Organization and Layout: The rulebook is perfectly organized from start to finish so you can read while learning to play. Everything has a nice large easy to read font and the layout is attractive, letting you get to the rules while still looking pretty.
Clarity: The rules were clear and simple, I didn't find myself confused at any point.
Graphics: The pictures used for examples were wonderful! More nice and big fonts for easy reading. One of the things I really like is how the fonts match up the game really well and the cards are intuitive for learning the rules. Plus everything just plain looks good! Having nice artwork can't hurt in making your rulebook shine.
Depth: There weren't any edge cases mentioned in the rulebook. From what I could see all of the cards were incredibly straightforward and when you could play them was very clear as well so this may not be necessary.
Writing: The writing was clear and concise with that professional quality you expect when reading through a rulebook. I didn't find any grammar mistakes or typos as well which is always good to see!

Now that I have put these rules through rigorous mustache testing it's time to give them a rating! On the Susan Rating Scale I chose to give this rulebook:
This rulebook really was an attractive package. It is easy to sit down and learn all of the rules fast, there isn't any fluff to clog it up, and boy does it look nice! I'm still in lover with how nice the layout and graphics where and am especially pleased how intuitive the game is to learn with it's cards from the rulebook. This rulebook definitely passes my mustache test!
